History of the Mudi
The Mudi was once classified as one breed along with the other Hungarian herders, the Puli and the Pumi. They were not separated until 1936 and for that reason their ancestry is unknown. Some have suggested that the Mudi is the result of a spitz-type dog crossed with the Pumi, but this is nothing more than a guess. It is known that well into the 20th century Mudi-like puppies were born into Puli litters and are still born into Pumi litters today. It is also possible for pups similar to Puli and Pumis to be born to a Mudi mother. It is clear all three are closely intertwined, although we may never know how their ancestry weaves together.
